FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is your copywriting experience?
I’m a journalist by profession, but copywriting has been a big part in my career to date. I cut my teeth as an advertorial writer for Community Newspaper Group – liaising with a variety of small to medium sized businesses, writing short, punchy copy that captured the essence of their brand.
From there I wrote content for luxury homes and lifestyle clients at Scoop Publishing, putting together feature content and proofing words and graphics back, as well as writing online profiles.
Flash forward to my next role at The Australian Mining Review where I was coordinating advertising and assisting clients write their ads and advertorial content. While I loved the journalism aspect of my work, copywriting for clients was my calling.
I’ve since done freelance copywriting for businesses, written web copy, blogs and corporate communication content.
What are your qualifications?
I hold a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English from the University of Western Australia, Master of International Journalism from the University Western Australia, and more recently completed the Copywriting Essentials course through the Australian Writers Centre. I’m also constantly upskilling in the digital marketing space to stay up to date with the latest and greatest things happening.
What is your writing style?
Versatile. I have written about a range of topics (local news, luxury homes, travel, events, car dealerships, restaurants, real estate, education, to mining, oil and gas), which has afforded me with many opportunities to hone my writing skills. If its long, well-researched articles you’re after, I’m your girl. Professional corporate communications, can do. Wanting short, punny Instagram captions- ready when you are!
How can you write about my business or manage my socials without being in it?
My job is to extract information, dig deep to get to the heart of your brand, and create compelling content that will have you and your team buzzing with excitement.
It all starts with the brief- you can fill this out yourself from a questionnaire I send you, or we can arrange a meeting or a phone chat to nut out all the essentials. After working for six years as a journalist, I’m a pro (if I can say so myself) at becoming an expert fast across a business/topic and will ask all the right questions to get the information I need.
My aim is to make the process as simple as possible for you so you can get back to doing what you do well - running your business.
What type of businesses do you work with?
One-man bands, small businesses, medium businesses to large corporate brands. I love the diversity of working with a large range of clients and industries.
Can we make changes once the copy is written?
Of course. As part of my copywriting packages you will receive two rounds of revisions. However, there is nothing I love more than nailing the first draft, so together we will finalise a detailed brief and skeleton draft before the writing process begins.
Can you do a trial piece for me?
I’m happy to start with a smaller project (i.e. a blog post, social media audit) for you to see if I’m the right fit for you, however this will be charged at my standard rate. You’ll also find samples of my work in my portfolio.
How long will the copywriting process take?
It’s hard to say as all projects are different, and delivery depends on how busy I am. To give you an idea, for most writing jobs I aim to send through the first draft within 7-14 days. Before starting any project, I’ll provide you with clear deadlines for the project stages, as I understand how important it is to deliver on time. If you’re interested in working together, I recommend booking in advance. But I understand some jobs are needed in a hurry, so I can accommodate rush jobs (within 48 hours or less) at a 25 per cent loading rate.
How much do you charge?
I quote by the project instead of an hourly rate. I find this works best for clients, so there are no nasty surprises at the end of a project, and you and I know exactly what’s in the project scope. I have a few ballpark figures for website copy and social media packages listed on my site you may have already found, but the best way is to contact me with what you need, so I can provide you with an individual quote, as every project is different.
Where are you located?
I work from my home office in Perth’s northern suburbs with my trusty side-kicks (my fur children Loui and Milo) but have worked with clients across Australia.
I’m in Perth too, can we meet?
Thanks to the power of the Internet and Skype, for most of my projects a face-to-face meeting isn’t essential. I have a pretty smooth online process, so this can easily be rolled out over the phone and email. While I’d love to grab a coffee (or glass of red) with all my clients, this wouldn’t leave a lot of time for all that good stuff, like writing your copy or planning your socials. Having said that, if you would like to meet in person to discuss your project, this can be arranged.
How do I get started?
So, you’re interested in working together? I can’t wait to hear from you. Flick me an email with your project details and I’ll aim to get back to you as fast as I can with a quote.
Is copywriting anything to do with copyright?
This one comes up a lot- you’re not the first that’s wondered. But nope, copyright refers to legal ownership of a document. Copywriting is the art of writing copy.
Do you require a deposit?
Most freelancers in Australia will require a 50 per cent deposit up front. Head to my How I Work page for all the details.
Can you write for my specific industry?
If I had to put together a list of all the industries I’ve written for…well it would be very long list. One of the things I’m proud of is my ability to jump from one industry to another and quickly learn the ins and outs. I am comfortable writing about all topics, and have a special interest in lifestyle brands, homes and design, hospitality, fashion, and mining.
Do you work with any graphic designers or web developers?
I am lucky to be part of an INSANELY talented network of Perth creatives – graphic designers, digital marketers, e-commerce experts, writers, web developers – you name it. If you’re after any recommendations, I can point you in the right direction or work alongside them to deliver the finished product.
